Stacked, Tiered and Vertical Pocket Layouts
The most common build stacks two pockets on each panel. A tall back pocket holds full pages, and a shorter front pocket sits over it like a step. Because the front pocket is lower, the label or top line of the page behind it stays readable.
Vertical pockets run up the side of a panel instead of across the bottom. They suit narrow items such as brochures, rate cards or rack cards. Some clients mix the two, with a vertical pocket beside a standard horizontal one.

Sorting Heavy Paperwork Into Four Sections
Four pockets let you divide a thick packet the way the reader will use it. One pocket for documents to sign, one for copies to keep, one for reference and one for forms to return.
Print a short label above each pocket so nobody has to guess. Clear labels cut down on calls asking where a page went. For packets that also need bound pages, a brad folder build with fasteners can be combined with stacked pockets.
Planning Your Four Pocket Folder
- Sort a real packet into four piles and note the thickest pile.
- Choose stacked, vertical or mixed pockets to match those piles.
- Write a short label for each pocket so readers know where pages go.
- Pick a heavier board and add a capacity gusset where the stack is deepest.
- Send artwork and review the proof for pocket heights, labels and slits.
Stock and Pocket Strength for a Full Load
Four loaded pockets put real weight on the folds. We suggest 16 pt C2S or 18 pt board so the folder holds its shape when stuffed. Glued and reinforced pockets keep the lower edges from splitting.
When one section holds a thick contract, ask for a capacity pocket on that side. The small gusset lets the pocket expand without bowing the cover. A matte or gloss lamination also protects the outside from scuffs.
Where 4 Pocket Folders Earn Their Place
Human resources teams use them for new hire packets with tax forms, handbooks and benefit sheets. Our custom onboarding folders page covers that use in more detail.
Title companies, lenders and dealerships hand out closing and deal packets this way. Schools use four pockets for enrollment forms sorted by subject. Contractors keep bids, drawings, permits and warranties apart in one cover.
Medical offices and law firms reach for them too, when a single visit or matter produces several stacks of paper. Four pockets keep each stack apart without a second folder.

Custom 4 Pocket Folders: questions we get
How are the four pockets arranged?
The standard layout stacks two pockets on each inside panel, with the front pocket shorter so labels behind it show. Vertical side pockets are also available. We can draw a layout to match your documents.
Can I get a 4 pocket folder with brads?
Yes. Brads or prong fasteners go at the center fold between the panels. They bind hole-punched pages while the four pockets hold loose sheets.
Will four pockets make the folder too thick?
The pockets add a little bulk at the bottom edge, but the folder still closes flat with a normal load. For thick sections, a capacity gusset spreads the extra depth.
What stock do you recommend for four pockets?
We suggest 16 pt or 18 pt board because a full set of pockets carries more weight. Compare options in our paper stocks and finishes guide before you choose.
Can each pocket be printed with a label?
Yes. Pocket faces are part of the printed artwork, which means each one can carry a label. Simple labels like Sign, Keep, Read and Return work well.
Is a 4 pocket folder the same as a tri-fold?
No. A four pocket folder keeps two panels and stacks the pockets. A tri-fold adds a third panel, usually with one pocket on each.
