Custom Oversized 11x17 Folders for Plans and Drawings

Custom oversized 11x17 folders close at about 11.5 x 17.5 inches and carry tabloid sheets without a single fold. They are built for drawings, plans, renderings and large-format proofs that lose meaning when creased.

  • 11.5 x 17.5 in closed
  • Holds 11 x 17 in sheets
  • 5 in deep pockets
  • 18 pt board available

Large-format work that should never be folded

A fold line through a floor plan cuts across walls and dimensions. A crease through a rendering or a print proof ruins the image you worked to make. An 11x17 folder lets those sheets travel flat, so the client sees them exactly as drawn.

Architects, engineers and surveyors send plan sets at tabloid size. Builders bring site plans and elevations to homeowner meetings. Landscape designers, sign makers and print buyers carry large proofs, and our folders for contractors and builders suit trade teams that want a job-site look.

Dimensions of an oversized 11x17 folder

The folder closes at 11.5 x 17.5 inches (292 x 445 mm). That leaves a quarter inch around each edge of an 11 x 17 inch sheet (279 x 432 mm). Open flat, the printed sheet spans 23 x 17.5 inches before any spine is added.

Most clients use the folder in portrait, with the spine on the long left edge. Landscape is possible when your drawings run sideways, with the spine along the 11.5 inch top edge. Tell us which way your sheets read and we will set up the die-line to match.

Ordering an oversized folder

  1. Measure your largest sheet and count the drawings in a typical set.
  2. Choose portrait or landscape based on how your plans read.
  3. Pick 16 pt or 18 pt board, and add a spine if sets are bound.
  4. Lay your logo and project photo on our 11x17 die-line.
  5. Check the proof at full scale, then approve printing.

Pockets and board strong enough for heavy sheets

Tabloid sheets are heavy and flop over a short pocket. We set pockets at about 5 inches so the sheets stand up and do not slide out when the folder tilts. Glued pocket edges stop a thick plan set from splitting the seams.

Board choice matters more at this size. 16 pt C2S is the floor, and 18 pt board keeps a big folder from bending under a stack of drawings. A half inch spine or a capacity pocket handles bound plan sets and spec books.

Elastic bands across the open edge keep loose drawings from sliding out when the folder is carried under an arm on a job site.

How 11 x 17 compares with legal and 9 x 12

The next size down, a legal folder at 9.5 x 14.5 inches, holds 8.5 x 14 pages but not tabloid sheets. Below that, 9 x 12 holds letter pages. If your drawings could be printed at letter size and stay readable, a smaller folder saves board and postage.

Pick oversized when the sheet must stay full scale and unfolded. Many design firms keep both sizes: 9 x 12 for proposals and 11 x 17 for drawings. You can request both in one quote for oversized folders and match the artwork.

Where tabloid folders earn their size

  • Plan sets for permit meetings and client reviews
  • Architectural renderings and design boards
  • Landscape and site plans for homeowners
  • Print proofs and press sheets for buyers
  • Student art and design portfolios
  • Large maps for tours and event venues

Custom Oversized 11x17 Folders: questions we get

What is the size of an 11x17 folder?

Ours close at about 11.5 x 17.5 inches. That holds a standard 11 x 17 inch tabloid sheet flat with a small margin on each side.

Can I order the folder in landscape?

Yes. We move the spine to the short edge so the folder opens like a sketchbook. This suits wide drawings and panoramic renderings.

Will 24 x 36 drawings fit?

Only when folded down to 11 x 17 or smaller. Many plan sets are folded that way already. A capacity pocket helps hold the extra bulk.

How do I mail an oversized folder?

A 12 x 18 inch flat mailer or a rigid envelope works. Add a cardboard backer if the folder carries only a few loose sheets.

What file setup do you need?

Send a print-ready PDF on our die-line with bleed on every edge. Our guide to print-ready artwork files covers resolution and safe zones for large panels.

Can I print a project title on the spine?

Yes, when the folder has a spine of a quarter inch or more. Spine text helps teams find a plan set on a shelf. Keep the type short and bold so it reads at a glance.
