Why a letter folder fails with legal pages
A standard 9 x 12 folder is two inches too short for a legal sheet. The page either sticks out the top or has to be folded, and both look careless in front of a client. A legal folder adds that missing height plus a half inch of margin.
The closed size is 9.5 x 14.5 inches (241 x 368 mm). Open flat, the sheet measures 19 x 14.5 inches before folding. That extra length gives your cover a tall, narrow canvas for a logo, a photo or a property image.

Custom legal folders for closings, contracts and filings
Title companies and escrow offices hand buyers a stack of legal-length papers at closing. Attorneys send engagement letters, agreements and case files on 8.5 x 14 stock. Lenders, insurance agents and county offices still use the long format for forms that need room for signatures.
Many of these offices mix sizes in one packet. Legal pages sit at the back, and letter pages and cards ride in front. If your practice wants a folder designed around that work, see our folders made for law firms as well.
Getting legal folders right the first time
- Count the thickest packet you hand out so we can size the spine.
- Tell us if letter pages, cards or a bound agreement ride with the legal sheets.
- Request the 9.5 x 14.5 die-line, which marks the spine and pocket glue zones.
- Place your logo on the tall front panel, keeping text clear of the fold line.
- Check the proof against a real legal page before you approve printing.
Pockets, spines and capacity for long packets
Each inside panel can carry a 4 inch pocket, so the top of every legal page stays readable. Closing packets often run thick, so we can add a spine of a quarter, half or full inch. A capacity pocket with gusseted sides holds a bound agreement without bending it.
Card slits on either pocket hold the agent or attorney card. Two glued pockets resist tearing when the folder is opened many times during a signing. Reinforced pockets cost a little more paper but survive a long meeting.
Sitting between 9 x 12 and 11 x 17
One size down, the 9 x 12 folder uses less paper but cannot hold a legal page flat. One size up, the oversized 11 x 17 folder holds tabloid sheets and drawings, which most offices never need. Legal size is the right middle when your longest sheet is 14 inches.
Ask yourself one question before you order: does any page in the packet measure 8.5 x 14 inches? If yes, choose legal. If not, a letter folder saves paper. Send a sample packet with your legal folder quote request and we will confirm the size.
Details offices ask for
- Legal pages stay flat and unfolded
- Room on the cover for a firm name and seal
- Embossed or foil logo for a formal look
- Matte lamination that cuts glare under office lights
- Spine printing so filed folders read on a shelf
- Pockets sized to show page headers above the fold
Legal Size Presentation Folders: questions we get
What size is a legal size presentation folder?
Ours close at 9.5 x 14.5 inches and open to 19 x 14.5 inches. That holds standard 8.5 x 14 inch legal paper flat. A spine adds width to the open size.
Will letter pages fit too?
Yes. Letter pages at 8.5 x 11 inches sit lower in the pocket, so their tops are hidden. Some clients add a shorter pocket on one side for letter pages.
Do I need a spine?
Skip the spine for packets of about 20 sheets or fewer. Thicker closing packets close better with a quarter or half inch spine. A full inch suits bound documents.
Can you print on the inside of the folder?
Yes. Many offices print a checklist, a contact panel or a map on the inside. Our artwork guidelines for print files explain bleed and safe zones.
Which finish looks most formal?
Linen-textured cover with a blind embossed logo looks quiet and traditional. Soft-touch lamination with gold foil reads as modern. Both work well on the tall front panel.
Is a legal folder too big for my mail?
It fits a 10 x 15 inch catalog envelope. Most offices hand these over in person, but mailing works with a stiff backer.
