Built for narrow pieces, not sheets of paper
A 4x9 folder has one job: to keep tall, thin pieces together and on brand. Rack cards, event tickets, boarding passes, gift cards and coupons all share that long, narrow shape. Loose, they get lost in a bag; inside a mini folder, they stay as one set.
The folder closes at 4 x 9 inches (102 x 229 mm) and opens to 8 x 9 inches. Inserts up to about 3.75 x 8.5 inches slide in, so rack cards are trimmed slightly from their usual 4 x 9 size. We can print the trimmed cards with the folders so the set fits together.

Mini pocket folder layouts
The usual build has a short pocket on the right panel, about 2.5 to 3 inches tall. A 4 x 9 two pocket folder puts a pocket on each side, such as tickets on the left and a map on the right. A curved or angled pocket edge shows more of each card.
Slits are where the mini size shines. We can cut slits sized for a business card, a gift card or a hotel key card. For a folder made just for cards, see our custom gift card holders as well.
If the pocket gets crowded, a small gusset lets the folder hold a few extra tickets or a folded map without bulging at the fold.
Setting up a mini folder order
- Gather one of each insert, including cards, tickets and rack cards.
- Decide on one pocket or a 4 x 9 two pocket layout.
- Tell us which card slits you need and on which panel.
- Place your art on our 4 x 9 die-line, keeping logos clear of the slits.
- Approve the free proof, and add matching trimmed inserts if you want them.
Who hands out mini folders
Theaters and sports venues use them as ticket sleeves with a seating map inside. Hotels tuck key cards and a welcome note into one. Travel agents pass along itineraries and vouchers, and gyms add a membership card and a class schedule.
Retailers and restaurants sell gift cards in mini folders at the register. Banks and car dealers hand out keys, cards and contact details in the same format. Our ticket jackets for venues and events follow a similar idea for ticket-only packets.
Mini 4x9 versus a 6x9 folder
The next size up is 6 x 9, which takes half-letter sheets at 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Mini folders cannot hold those, but they mail in a standard #10 envelope with a letter. That makes 4 x 9 the pick for direct mail and for anything a guest slips into a pocket.
Choose mini if your widest insert is under 3.75 inches. Move up to 6 x 9 the moment a half-letter sheet joins the set. If you are unsure, our custom folder quote form lets you list the inserts and we will size it.
Mini folder strengths
- Slides into a #10 business envelope
- Fits brochure racks beside rack cards
- Keeps gift and key cards from getting lost
- Low paper use per piece for large handouts
- Holds a full set of event tickets
- Ideal for counter displays at checkout
Mini Presentation Folders (4x9): questions we get
What are mini presentation folders used for?
They hold narrow pieces such as rack cards, tickets, gift cards, vouchers and coupons. Hotels, venues, travel agents and retailers use them most.
Will a 4 x 9 rack card fit inside?
A full 4 x 9 inch card is the same size as the folder, so it will not fit. Trim the card to about 3.75 x 8.5 inches. We can print the trimmed cards for you.
Can I mail a 4x9 folder?
Yes. It fits a standard #10 envelope, which measures 4.125 x 9.5 inches. Keep the inserts thin so the envelope closes flat.
Can I get two pockets on a mini folder?
Yes. A 4 x 9 two pocket folder works well for tickets on one side and directions on the other. Each pocket can carry its own slit.
Which finish suits a gift card folder?
Soft-touch lamination with gold or silver foil feels like a gift. Gloss lamination with spot UV makes the colors pop at the register.
Do you print the inserts as well?
Yes. We can print rack cards, vouchers or ticket inserts trimmed to fit, using the same artwork style as the folder. Ordering both together keeps the fit and the color consistent across the set.
